Surgical Body Contouring

Shaping the body to improve love-handles, belly fat and other unsightly cosmetic problems is a highly popular treatment these days. As people become more and more overweight, treatments which can slim them down are increasingly common. For people who are in need of invasive surgery, there are options depending on the part of the body they need to improve. Among the most common procedures in this category is liposuction.

Traditional Liposuction

Liposuction is an invasive surgery that involves the insertion of a cannula (flexible tube) into the skin to remove fat cells and fluid from the body. Liposuction is effective at removing localized deposits of fat cells from the body, but is not meant for people who are very overweight. It’s important that you do not have any heart or artery problems, are of normal weight, and have no history of blood clots. It’s also important that you have normal, elastic skin. Skin that is overly loose or not elastic enough may look worse following liposuction. Patients who are a normal, healthy weight prior to liposuction are the ideal candidate for the procedure.

Liposuction involves anesthesia, which may be general, local or tumescent. The anesthesia prevents any pain during the surgery. Once it has taken affect, the surgeon will begin to remove fat from the body through the cannula. Recovery may take several weeks and may involve post-operative swelling and pain. Final results may take 3 months to appear.

Buttocks Lift Surgery

A buttocks lift may be very affective for patients who have experienced a great deal of drooping of the skin in that area. The buttocks lift improves the tightness and texture of the butt and thighs. It may be performed in conjunction with liposuction or laser liposuction. The incision is generally made below the waistline and may be performed in an outpatient center or hospital. General and local anesthesia may be used during the treatment. Bruising and swelling are common for up to two weeks following the procedure.

Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck helps improve the contour of the body by removing excess fat and skin from the stomach area. It tightens abdominal muscles as well. Tummy tucks may be “complete”, where the incision reaches across the abdomen from one hip to the other, or they may be “mini”, with a small incision along the bikini area. The goal with a tummy tuck is to flatten the belly region and improve the shape of the stomach.
