SmoothShapes is an FDA approved device which combines laser energy and massage to improve the look of skin with cellulite. Its combination of deep tissue mechanical massage and targeted laser energy, called Photomology™, has been patented by Eleme Medical Inc.
SmoothShapes targets the cells in the skin called fibrous septae which, in people with cellulite, have become rigid and inflexible. This rigidity causes the enlarged fat cells within the fibrous septae to bulge outward against the skin, causing the appearance of cellulite. The goal is to smooth out this appearance and improve the contour and shape of the body.
The SmoothShapes technology does not eliminate or destroy the fat cells within the fibrous septae, it merely aims to increase the metabolism of these cells. It also stimulates collagen production to help rejuvenate and tighten skin. The laser energy also aims to melt away some of the fat, while the rollers in the massage move this liquid to the lymphatic system and out of the body.
Treatment with SmoothShapes is usually a series of 2 weekly treatments over 8 weeks. Prior to treatment with SmoothShapes there is no preparation needed on the part of the patient. During the procedure you will feel the massage from the rollers and some mild heat produced by the laser energy. Afterward you may have some redness in the skin which generally fades soon after treatment.
