Zerona Cold Laser Fat Reduction

"Melting" the Fat Away

Zerona is a non-invasive treatment option, developed by Santa Barbara Medical Innovations (SBMI), for people who want to lose fat in isolated trouble spots—like love handles or belly bulges. According to SBMI Zerona uses a "cool laser" technology that essentially "melts" unwanted fat away.

Zerona received the approval of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the removal of unwanted body fat in September 2010. It was among the first such "laser fat removal" device approved by the FDA for non-invasive slimming and re-contouring the body.

How Does Zerona Work?

According to SBMI, Zerona targets adipose (fat) cells with specific low-level wavelengths of light that cause the fat to seep out of the cells. The cells are then said to deflate, resulting in a smaller, tighter contour. The fat itself is then thought to be safely absorbed into the body’s lymphatic system, and is eventually metabolized by the liver.

What Is the Treatment Like?

Unlike liposuction and other invasive fat-reduction treatments, Zerona treatments are painless and non-invasive. Sessions usually last about 40 minutes. The typical number of treatments needed depends on how much fat is being targeted, but a typical treatment series involves 6 sessions spread over two weeks.

Risks, Recovery, and Results

According to SBMI, because Zerona treatments are non-invasive and do not require an anesthetic, they pose no medical risks. For the same reasons, Zerona requires no recovery time. You may be able to return to your daily activities immediately, although your doctor will probably advise you to drink plenty of water.

Not For Everyone

Zerona is not meant to replace diet and exercise—indeed, if you do see any results you may regain those lost inches you lose if you don’t follow good health habits. (That’s because, according to SBMI, the treatment doesn’t destroy the fat cells, it just ‘empties’ them.) Nor is laser fat removal for people who need to lose a lot of weight or who have broad areas of fat. SBMI says that the ideal candidate for Zerona is those patients who have a pocket of fat that you haven’t been able to get rid of, despite your best diet and exercise efforts.
